Funding and Opportunities

Language Sciences student members are an integral part of the Institute. Check out this page for upcoming conferences, opportunities, and more.

Graduate Training Fund

Do you have an opportunity to visit another research lab, institute, or centre in order to develop your research skills, provide training, or receive supervision and mentorship? We have funds to support graduate student training and development!

Graduate student and postdoctoral fellow members can request travel funding to visit research labs at other institutions and to take part in interdisciplinary skills training opportunities outside UBC. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis by the Language Sciences Steering Committee.

Funding For Member-led Initiatives

Graduate student and postdoctoral fellow members can also request funds for member-led initiatives, so long as their request is sponsored by at least one faculty member and involve members from more than one department.

Examples of eligible activities include:

  • Hosting cross-departmental/interdisciplinary workshops and symposia, including travel and accommodation costs for workshop participants, catering, and venue space.
  • Inviting speakers who might have broad appeal on campus.
  • Supporting grant or research facilitation (such as hiring a grant writer to support an interdisciplinary grant application, or hiring a grad student to support planning and administration of workshops or symposia that will be of broad interest to language sciences members, or building relationships with community and industry partners).
