Hey graduate students and postdoctoral fellows: we want your abstracts!
Language Sciences Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Research Day is coming up on May 10, 2024 (Friday) at UBC Vancouver, and we want your abstracts! It is a platform for you to share your research with like-minded researchers and scholars, engage in constructive discussions, and enjoy a fun day!
Whether you're a graduate student at UBC or a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Victoria, please consider submitting your work – and please spread the word far and wide. Submissions are welcomed from UBCV, UBCO, and any institution in Lower Mainland. Research may be in progress, complete, or previously presented work.
Awards
Awards for The Best Talk and Poster Presentation will be granted. Judges will determine and announce the top picks during the conference. Students will be awarded the following:
- First Place for Best Talk: $500
- First Place for Best Poster: $250
The deadline for abstract submissions is 11:59PM (PST) March 15th, 2024 (Friday)
Submission Requirements
Research
We invite abstract submissions of scholarly work that relates to language in any way, from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective. Research may be in progress, complete, or previously presented work. Presentations in preparation for conference talks are welcome. Types of studies accepted include empirical studies, theoretical or methodological studies, or replication studies.
Researchers
Researchers must be graduate students (M.A., M.Sc., M.Ed., Ph.D. students and candidates) or postdoctoral fellows. We welcome submissions from UBCV, UBCO, and other institutions across the Lower Mainland, including Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria. You are welcome to email us at language.sciences@ubc.ca for inquiries and assistance about the event.
Format
We are seeking proposals for individual paper presentations (approx. 20 minutes) and poster presentations. Please prepare a PDF version of your abstract, including:
- Title of Presentation
- Preference for paper presentation or poster presentation
- Up to five keywords
- Abstract (250 words maximum, not including references)
- References
- Please do not include any author names or author identifying information in the document or document filename, to assist in the blind review process.
- While we will consider your preference for paper or poster presentation, we are unable to accommodate all preferences. We will communicate with the seleced researchers as appropriate.
Abstracts must include the following:
- Purpose – questions addressed or hypotheses tested
- Methods/techniques
- Results/Conclusions/Interpretations
- Optional components as applicable to your study include:
- Data sources (for empirical research)
- Perspectives/Theoretical Framework
- Significance
We are also inviting faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to volunteer to review abstracts (as well as attend!) If you are interested in volunteering, please email language.sciences@ubc.ca by February 26th.
