Language Sciences student members are an integral part of the Institute. Check out this page for upcoming conferences, opportunities, and more.
Graduate Training Fund
Training funds are available through LangSci’s Global Research Excellence Institute Funding. They are intended to help support students visiting research labs either at UBC or at other institutions, or take part in other interdisciplinary skills training opportunities outside UBC. Appropriate use of funds include airfare and room and board. These funds may not be used to support travel to conferences, workshops, or symposia, nor may they be used to support direct costs of research, including research supplies and subject recruitment. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis by the Language Sciences Steering Committee.
If funds are awarded, a written report must be submitted following the activity, detailing how the funds were used and the outcome/s of the activity. Spending should adhere to the UBC Expenditure Guidelines, especially with regard to travel expenses.
Requests are capped at $3,000. If you have questions regarding eligible uses of funds or other concerns, please email language.sciences@ubc.ca.
Funding For Member-led Initiatives
Graduate student and postdoctoral fellow members can also request funds for member-led initiatives, so long as their request is sponsored by at least one faculty member and involve members from more than one department.
Examples of eligible activities include:
- Hosting cross-departmental/interdisciplinary workshops and symposia, including travel and accommodation costs for workshop participants, catering, and venue space.
- Inviting speakers who might have broad appeal on campus.
- Supporting grant or research facilitation (such as hiring a grant writer to support an interdisciplinary grant application, or hiring a grad student to support planning and administration of workshops or symposia that will be of broad interest to language sciences members, or building relationships with community and industry partners).
