Nancy Hornberger Talk, July 31, Ponderosa Commons Multipurpose Room
On Monday, July 31, Dr. Nancy H. Hornberger (University of Pennsylvania) will be giving a talk on “Teaching and Researching the Continua of Biliteracy”. The talk will begin at 1:30 pm in the Ponderosa Commons Multipurpose Room (room 2012); light refreshments will be served beginning at 1:15. All are welcome!

Remembering Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson
On Wednesday May 31, a dear member of our Language Sciences community, Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson, passed away from complications of lymphoma. Eric was Professor of Linguistics and the former Director of the Cognitive Systems Program; he had been at UBC since 2003.

Bryan Gick awarded Guggenheim Fellowship
Congratulations to our co-director, Dr. Bryan Gick, who has been awarded a 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Fellowships are awarded to scholars, artists and scientists from a range of fields on the basis of “prior achievement and exceptional promise”; we couldn’t agree more that Dr.

Janet Werker Gold Medal Lecture, May 12, Science World
In honour of Janet Werker’s SSHRC Gold Medal Award, UBC’s Faculty of Arts and Department of Psychology are holding a special public lecture on May 12 at Science World. Dr. Werker will be speaking on ‘Bilingual Babies’ from 5:30-6:45, with a reception to follow.
