Ex Machina film screening and Q&A, Dr. Murray Shanahan

Join UBC Language Sciences and Designing for People for this screening of the film 'Ex Machina', followed by a Q&A with Dr. Murray Shanahan.
Ex Machina (2015): A young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I. Certification: MPAA: Rated R for graphic nudity, language, sexual references and some violence. Canada: PG (British Columbia)
Dr. Shanahan was a scientific advisor on the film and is author of book 'Embodiment and the Inner Life: Cognition and Consciousness in the Space of Possible Minds' which helped inspire the movie. UBC Computer Science professors Joanna McGrenere and Dongwook Yoon will host a Q&A with Dr. Shanahan discussing the role of conversational AI agents, the nature of consciousness and AI, and more. Participants are invited to ask questions and join the discussion.
The movie will be available to view for 48 hours from Friday 4th June at 6pm (PDT) to Sunday 6th June at 6pm (PDT). A link to the online screening, and the Zoom Q&A, will be sent to registered participants prior to the viewing period. Current UBC students, faculty and staff can view the film via Criterion.
