Research Themes:  Language, Sustainability and Transnationalism

Hannah McElgunn is a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia.

Her research and ethical commitments are centered at Hopi, the name for an Indigenous community, language, and way of life in Northeastern Arizona. Since 2014, she has been exploring the often competing frameworks of knowledge production and exchange that underlie Indigenous linguistic and cultural revitalization efforts.

McElgunn received a joint PhD in Anthropology and Linguistics from the University of Chicago in 2020, and incorporates methodologies and theories from both disciplines into her work, focusing on grammatical and textual structure, deixis and indexicality, and intertextuality.

Research interests: semiotic theory; Hopi language; intertextuality and interdiscursivity; knowledge production and circulation; translation; revitalization and repatriation; Indigeneity and settler-colonialism
