Research Themes:

The Communicating Mind and Body

Murray is currently manager of the Interdisciplinary Speech Research Laboratory (ISRL). He earned his PhD in linguistics from UBC in 2013 and returned to the ISRL after a postdoc at the University of Rochester. Murray’s main research interests involve the interaction of language and music. He is particularly interested in issues related to the influence of language on the creation and/or performance of music. Topics of study include the realization of lexical tone in singing in tone languages (particularly in Cantonese and Mandarin), the carry-over of spoken accent to singing performance, and influences of phonological structure on text setting.
