M. Willis Monroe is a specialist on writing systems of textual knowledge from the ancient Middle East. His work spans the origins of writing in Mesopotamia down to the end of cuneiform writing. Recent work has focused on computer-aided decipherment of Proto-Elamite, as well as the interplay between diagram and text in astronomical and astrological texts. He has also worked extensively on the use of paratextual markers written on cuneiform tablets.
