Dr. Sonja Thoma
Language coach
Research Themes: The Communicating Mind and Body
Sonja is an experienced linguist with a track record in community work, teaching, and research.
Currently, Sonja is working with Indigenous communities, schools and individuals on language research and teaching projects. She has been developing Halq’méylem language resources for Stó:lō Nation since 2017, and continues to work with several communities in supporting language learners and teachers, developing resources and applying for grants. Previously she worked as part of the language and culture team at FNESC (First Nations Education Steering Committee) as language coach, supporting First Nations language teachers all over BC in their classrooms.
She is lucky enough to live in the Kootenays with her family, on the unceded and ancestral territories of the Sinixt. She loves to be out in nature, hike, read, rollerskate (yes, the kind with 4 wheels), and practice the martial art Aikido.
