Language Sciences Welcomes Interim Communications Specialist

June 10, 2025

Language Sciences is delighted to welcome Camilia Lalani as our new Communications Specialist, covering Mona Chu while she works temporarily as manager. Camilia brings with her great experiences in communications and new perspectives on LangSci's communications. Meet her through this small set of Q&As, and feel free to reach out to her about communications issues!

1. Hi Camilia! Welcome to our team. We know that you have had extensive experience in communications. Can you tell us about it?

Thank you! I’m really happy to be joining your team!

Previously, I worked with different UN agencies helping Ethics Offices with their communication-based activities. My first role was with UNICEF, and the Ethics Office function had been recently created within the UN system. It was a unique time to be joining the organization and developing the outreach materials for the office from scratch. I then moved to WFP, where the Ethics Office function was also still in its early stages. Soon before I left, we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the establishment of the Ethics Offices within the UN. It was an exciting year and we had a lot to celebrate. 10-year anniversaries are so special and I’m looking forward to working on LangSci’s 10-year!

2. What are you passionate about outside of work?

I love the outdoors and discovering different trails on the North Shore. There are so many! I also make botanical perfume and am passionate about different flower essences and the nuances that can be found even within one flower variety. For example, I have many rose essences from different parts of the world and am endlessly amazed at their complexity and unique characteristics. Of course, I love language and the windows it opens. I speak French and Spanish and some of my most formative life experiences are due to that.

3. What can people reach out to you for help with?

People can come to me for help with anything communications-related—whether it's promoting a book, sharing research highlights, or brainstorming ways to share your work with broader audiences. I'm here to help get your message out clearly and effectively!
