Call for Applications: Graduate Student seat on Language Sciences Institute Steering Committee

The Language Sciences Institute is welcoming applications from a new or returning graduate student to join our Steering Committee until  March 31, 2026.  

Opportunities

  • Represent UBC graduate student interests and perspectives in meetings of the LangSci Steering Committee
  • Co-lead the development and implementation of graduate-student-focused programming in cooperation with the Language Sciences Research, Engagement, and Operations Manager. 
  • Participate in other research, knowledge mobilization, community engagement, and equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives of the Steering Committee as they arise and pertain to your interests
  • Gain leadership and academic governance experience, and receive mentorship from fellow Steering Committee members

Expectations

  • Attend regular Steering Committee meetings (held approx. 4 times / year)
  • Participate in the planning and execution of the annual Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Research Day
  • Identify and develop programming to enhance LangSci graduate student professional development, research training, community engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration (with support from LangSci staff). 

Equity and Compensation

To ensure equal opportunities for highly qualified graduate students who are interested in serving the University community in this capacity, the Language Sciences Institute will provide a stipend of up to $750/month of service. In particular, we encourage graduate students who are IBPOC or members of other racialized or marginalized groups (including those who are differently abled or neurodiverse) to apply.

Eligibility

Graduate Students at UBC Vancouver whose core research is related to language from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective.

  • Name and status (Masters or Ph.D. Student, Ph.D. Candidate)
  • Department (must be from UBC Vancouver) 
  • A one- to two-page letter of intent including:
    • A brief description of your research and professional development interests
    • Your reasons for applying to join the LangSci Steering Committee, and in particular your goals for graduate student programming during your service term
    • Any past leadership or other experience you may have that would be an asset to the committee
    • A brief statement of your commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • One short letter of reference by your referee (if you are unable to submit your letter of reference by the deadline, please feel free to just send us the contact details of your reference
