Movie Matinée and Q&A: Arrival with Drs. Coon, Sonderegger and Travis
November 26, 2020, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Take me to your leader – and help me communicate with them.
Join Language Sciences for our Movie Matinée of Arrival followed by a Q&A with consultant linguists Drs. Jessica Coon, Morgan Sonderegger, and Dr Lisa Travis.
In Arrival, a linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after 12 spacecraft appear around the world. Join us to find out how consultant linguists developed an alien language, and what considering alien communication tells us about language on earth.
The synchronized viewing at 2pm PST will be followed by an online Q&A at 4pm PST with McGill linguists and consultants on the film, Associate Professors Jessica Coon, Canada Research Chair in Syntax and Indigenous Languages, and Morgan Sonderegger, co-PI of the Montreal Computational & Quantitative Linguistics Lab, as well as Emeritus Professor Lisa Travis, whose office was used as a model for the film.
With an introduction by Portage Network training coordinator Dr. Jennifer Abel and SFU Language Learning and Development Lab manager Elise McClay.
NB: Because of licensing agreements and restrictions, access to this UBC Library digital content from home is limited to current UBC faculty, students and staff. Non-UBC attendees are welcome to join us for the Q&A at 4pm PST.
