Join us for our latest online Language Sciences flash talks: three five minute talks using only one slide by three of our members from different research themes, followed by time for discussion and questions.
The theme of these flash talks is 'AI and Cantopop: Language Tech for Social Good'. School of Information Professor Luanne (Freund) Sinnamon will introduce the talks, and serve as moderator.
Our speakers are:
- School of Information and Linguistics Assistant Professor Muhammad Abdul-Mageed, who will present his work with deep learning and language models, particularly to support under resourced languages
- Cantonese Language Program director and LLED doctoral student Raymond Pai, who will talk about his work using Cantonese popular culture to teach heritage language learners, including assigning students to create their own digital content in Cantonese
- Computer Science doctoral student Ganesh Jawahar, who will talk about his work on detecting machine generated language and code-switching
Everyone is welcome at these online flash talks. Maybe you’ll find a partner to apply for a grant (or LangSci funding). Or maybe you’ll just hear about the very different fields and perspectives of the Language Sciences membership.
