Literacy and Technology & New Media: Home Literacy Environment and Early Bilingual Vocabulary Gaps

May 17, 2022, 9:00 am to 9:00 am

Virtual (Zoom)

The foundation of bilingualism is built upon vocabulary development in both languages. However, bilingual children often experience differential trajectories in vocabulary development across their two languages. Such is the case of many Chinese bilingual children in North America. A body of research has found that Chinese bilingual children experience rapid growth in their English lexicon, while their heritage language (L1) vocabulary suffers from early stabilization and decline despite considerable L1 input in the home setting.

In this presentation, Dr. Guofang Li will present findings on Chinese Canadian bilingual first graders' patterns of achievement in English and Chinese oral receptive vocabulary and unpack various home literacy environment factors such as quality and quantity of language exposure, family language policy and parental gendered literacy beliefs and practices that shape the chileren's early bilingual vocabulary gaps.
