Meet the new Language Sciences Student Steering Committee Members
January 9, 2023
The Language Sciences Institute recently welcomed two new student members to our Steering Committee. Please join us in welcoming Suyuan Liu and Xin Sun!
Suyuan Liu - Ph.D. Student, UBC Linguistics
Suyuan is a Ph.D. student in Linguistics at the University of British Columbia. Her current research focuses on exploring the relation between speech perception and speech production within and across varieties of Mandarin. Suyuan is interested in how much one’s production strategies correlate with their perception strategies and what factors can lead to misalignment between one’s perception and production.
Research Themes: The Communicating Mind and Body
Xin Sun - Postdoctoral Fellow, UBC Psychology
Xin is a postdoctoral fellow at the Infant Studies Centre, working with Dr. Janet Werker. Her research investigates how early bilingualism influences children's language and literacy acquisition using combined behavioural and functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) neuroimaging approaches. She is also broadly interested in individual and cultural differences in people's beliefs about learning and education.
Xin’s current work examines the neuro-cognitive mechanisms of how babies and young children from bilingual and monolingual backgrounds understand word meanings.
