January 2016 saw the launch of a new language-related course at UBC: English/Linguistics 140, ‘Challenging Language Myths’. This course aims to lead students into critical consideration of a broad range of commonly held beliefs about language and its relation to the brain and cognition, learning, society, change and evolution. Co-taught by Dr. Laurel Brinton of the English department and Dr. Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson of the Linguistics department and the Cognitive Systems program, ‘Challenging Language Myths’ promises to be a popular course: in its first offering, it’s already at 98% capacity!
