Abstract:
This lecture is presented by Dr. Andy Chin from the Education University of Hong Kong. Chin is interested in exploring the relationship between digital technology and traditional humanities studies. The term “Digital Humanities” was coined to reflect this new trend. In this talk, Dr. Chin will discuss, by means of a Cantonese digital archive developed at EdUHK, how Cantonese studies can be undertaken with the digital humanities approach. The data of the nearly one-million-character archive was collected by transcribing the dialogues of 80 Cantonese movies produced in Hong Kong in the mid-20th century. The archive not only documents, preserves, and revitalizes the Cantonese language, but also allows us to explore some socio-cultural issues of the then Hong Kong society and promotes data-driven learning of Cantonese.
