Flash Talks Series 2023: Graduate Student & Postdoctoral Fellow

Yadong Liu is a PhD student in Linguistics at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on unveiling the unknowns in human speech production using techniques from experimental phonetics and computational modelling. The kind of questions he is interested in include a. what are the physiological postures in speech production? b. the motor control of speech postures and movements c. how does computational modelling contribute to the understand of motor control and human speech? 

Erica Dharmawan is a PhD student in the Department of Psychology, working under the supervision of Dr. D. Geoffrey Hall at the Language Development Centre. Her current research projects explore how children categorize and evaluate artifacts according to the identity of their maker.

Ana Laura Arrieta Zamudio is a Linguistics PhD candidate at UBC, specializing in fieldwork and semantics. She has conducted extensive research with San Pablo Güilá Zapotec (SPGZ), an Otomanguean language spoken in Oaxaca, Mexico, as well as with Ktunaxa, an isolated language in BC, Canada. Her PhD studies encompass various topics, including reflexives in SPGZ, conjectural questions in Ktunaxa, and modality in SPGZ.

Tutku is currently a Ph.D. student in Psychological Science at the University of British Columbia, working under the supervision of Dr. Elena Nicoladis. She holds a master's degree in Psychology from Sabancı University. Her research interest mainly focuses on the interaction between language, culture, and cognition. So far, she has been conducting research on second language learning as well as the effect of language and culture on cognitive processes including object conceptualization, memory, and deception.
