UBC Arts Languages Maximum December Institute 2024 | Effective Assessment and Learning in Language-Focused Courses using CEFR and ACTFL

RSVP NOW

Beyond standardized and summative testing, assessment in language-focused courses can also be an essential part of advancing language pedagogy. If you are a language teacher or teach courses with strong language components, we invite you to a one-day institute where we will explore how this can be done effectively.

The workshop will consist of a plenary presentation by a leading expert in assessment for language, followed by two practical workshops. The morning workshop will based on the CEFR framework and the afternoon one on principles from ACTFL, and together the two workshops will cover topics that include:

  • Assessment in the teaching cycle.
  • Practical uses of language assessment (i.e., selection, placement, certification, achievement, accountability) and the consequences (both intended and unintended) of assessment practices directed towards these ends.
  • Construct validity and different validity threats” that can arise, e.g., negative washback in classroom, impact on educational system and society.
  • Messick’s five sources of validity evidence: test content, response processes, internal structure, relationships to other variables, and consequences of testing.
  • Kane’s argument-based validation framework: scoring, generalization, extrapolation, implication.
  • Application of CEFR and ACTFL assessment principles to curriculum planning and lesson design, using backward design and setting communicative and cultural goals.
  • Use of Oral Proficiency Interviews.
  • Using scaffolding techniques and checklists.
  • Designing rubrics aligned with CEFR and ACTFL standards.
