Vancouver, BC | May 22 - 24, 2018 | 8:00am - 5:00pm
Seminar Room, Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies
Adequate comprehension of text is critical for success across development, as well as for personal growth, cultural understanding, and knowledge transfer. Many different fields of research have studied the development of literacy, each bringing exciting new insights and techniques. With this in mind, we launch an innovative new approach - ‘A Language Science of Literacy’, to bridge the gulf among these fields and create a truly interdisciplinary study of literacy.
In this three day meeting, researchers from the fields of language acquisition, literacy success, social-cultural context, computer science, and systems-level neuroscience, will share their expertise and, as such, provide a framework for linking the different disciplines.
Meeting Objectives:
- Develop an integrated framework for “A Language Science of Literacy”
- Share content across relevant research and community traditions
- Develop and strengthen community and industry partnerships
- Inspire and train the next generation of scholars in this new approach to literacy
- Plan key “proof of concept” studies
- Lay the groundwork for subsequent Canadian and international partnership grants
The first two days of the meeting are designed to address the first 4 goals, and will involve brief overviews from the applicants of their respective fields, flash talks from several of the attendees, and considerable time for discussion. The third day of the meeting is designed to address Goals 5 and 6, and is open to all who want to participate in such planning.
