Dr. Garrett Joseph Nicolai is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Linguistics and is the Director of Master of Data Science - Computational Linguistics (MDS-CL). His research interests lie in the application of computational tools to the analysis and development of under-resourced languages. He is also interested in the qualitative analysis of deep learning methods and their role in the development of computational tools for linguistic study.
In the classroom, Dr. Nicolai is interested in bringing computational skills to a wider audience. He notes that STEM fields are notorious for drawing interest from men and individuals from richer countries. He strongly believes in providing access to groups that have been traditionally left out of this field.
