Call for Working Group Members: Member Funding Proposal Review

Language Sciences is dedicated to providing fair and timely funding opportunities to its members. We are currently seeking LangSci members to serve on a working group responsible for reviewing proposals submitted by our members requesting funds from Language Sciences’ member funding streams:

  • Global Research Excellence funds (for indirect research costs)
  • Faculty seed funding (for direct research costs)

The working group aims to assess funding proposals in a thorough and objective manner, ensuring that LangSci supports member projects that align with its funding criteria, goals, and priorities.

Expectations and Responsibilities

As members of the working group, we kindly request your commitment to the following responsibilities:

  1. Active Participation:
  • Provide timely feedback on funding requests in October 2023 and January 2024, to facilitate timely funding decisions.
  1. Objective Proposal Review:
  • Review each submitted proposal objectively, considering its scientific merit, feasibility, and alignment with LangSci’s funding criteria.
  • Review and advise on assessment criteria to guide the evaluation process
  1. Confidentiality:
  • Treat all submitted proposals with utmost confidentiality
  • Avoid discussions or sharing details of the review process outside of the committee.
  1. Timely review:
  • Commit to reviewing proposals within the specified timeline
  1. Constructive Feedback:
  • Provide detailed feedback and constructive criticism of proposals to the working group when necessary
  • Consider equity, diversity, and inclusion aspects during the review process
  1. Conflict of Interest:
  • Declare any potential conflict of interest

Composition

The search committee will consist of 4-7 members, including:

  • Representatives from different units/departments across LangSci’s governing faculties of arts, education, science, and medicine, as well as applied science and others.
  • Representatives from different LangSci research themes (i.e., COMBO, LST, ELIE)
  • Representatives at different career stages, ranging from graduate students to full professors.

Volunteering

Those interested in joining the working group to review proposals may submit the following:

  • Name
  • Role (Professor or Sessional Lecturer, Postdoctoral Fellow, etc.)
  • Unit/Department (Psychology or Political Science, Sociology, etc.)
  • Very brief (3-4 sentence) explanation of why you are interested in joining the LangSci Member Funding Proposal Review committee.
