Parent Workshop: ABCs of Language Development [ONLINE]

May 24, 2025, 10:00 am

If you are a parent, caregiver or just interested in learning how language scientists think and how to support a child’s language, social, and emotional development, you should join this workshop :)

Language is an important vehicle that goes beyond a tool of communication. Children’s language abilities are related to their developing social skills, how easily they learn to read, and even their ability to do math. This is further complicated by a multilingual context that a lot of children in Canada find themselves in. Childhood literacy education is thus, a crucial first step for parents to explore

In this presentation, the speakers will introduce you to how language scientists think about language and then discuss ways that parents and caregivers can help support their child’s language development while also supporting their social and emotional development. You will learn tips of children literacy education during the workshop from experts, followed by further self-study through the book we provide. We hope to encourage a sustained and informed practice of children's literacy education at home that will benefit the learners’ communications skills and beyond.

Speakers

  • Dr. Guofang Li (Canada Research Chair, Professor of Language & Literacy Education, UBC)
  • Dr. Carla Hudson Kam (Department Head & Professor of Linguistics, UBC)

Dr. Guofang Li will draw examples from her research on multilingual education while Dr. Carla Hudson Kam will discuss tips from the book “The ABCs of Language Development: Discover Language with your Child” which she co-authored. The session will finish with a Q&A session to allow direct interaction between the audience and the speakers.
