2022 Summer Camp Instructor Positions - Linguistics Department

The Department of Linguistics invites UBC students to submit an application for the position of Camp Instructor for Summer 2022. We are looking to hire three individuals to work at the “Fun with English Language!” camp and the “Language Detectives” camp.  Camp Instructors work Monday-Friday up to 35 hours a week under the direction of the Summer Camp Coordinator.

The goal of these camps is to engage children with language-oriented activities in a fun and interactive way.

Camp Instructors will be required to fulfill a variety of different roles. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising and ensuring the fun and safety of children, ranging from 5-12 years old
  • Delegating tasks and responsibilities to volunteers
  • Developing and implementing the camp curriculum
  • Designing weekly activity plans and preparing camp materials

This is a great opportunity to gain leadership and program development skills while working with children and drawing out their passion for language!

The term of employment is Monday – Friday (up to 35 hrs/wk), June 27th, 2022 – September 2nd, 2022. Additional vacation may not be taken during this time. There will be a week of training and preparations for the camps from June 27th-June 30th. The camp itself runs weekdays throughout the summer from July 4th – September 2nd, from 9am – 4pm.

Qualifications:

  • Entering 3rd/4th year standing. Enrollment in a Linguistics, Speech Sciences, Cognitive Systems, or Language-Related program preferred
  • 1+ years experience working with children in group settings (previous experience as a camp leader preferred)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Fluency in Mandarin is an asset

Requirements:

  • Current Criminal Record Check completed by the start of employment
  • Current First-aid/CPR certification completed by the start of employment
  • Must be able to attend mandatory training

Wage:

Salary starts at $18.20 per hour
